Abstract
Because of legibility and directness of 3D map symbols, it can be widely used in 3D visualization system of spatial data, which will serve to improve the acknowledge capability of geographic environment. Based on the theory of map information transmission, this paper emphasize on the categorical rule and drafting law, and a principle of establishing a 3D symbol is presented. The one is that all kinds of spatial feature information which are suitable for description by 3D symbol models have been identified; the other one is that it should be implemented at the viewpoint of computer graphics and visualization. Also basic concept of 3D map symbol model, and the relative between traditional 2D symbol and 3D map symbol is stated. This paper discussed the concept and constructive law, and introduced the principle of it's design.
