Abstract
In this paper we discuss an intelligent tutor for elementary Spanish. The system consists of an ideal student model, a model of common student misconceptions, a model of the particular student's knowledge of Spanish, an ATN parser, and a conceptual dependency framework for semantics. It has a collection of short introductory stories which are presented to the user. The system operates by presenting the story, generating questions about the story, parsing the user's reply, analyzing the reply semantically, generating a response, and finally generating a follow-up question. The responses of these questions are parsed and if syntactically correct then checked semantically. However, if there is a syntactic error the system uses the individualized model of the user and the common misconception model to try to understand what the user intended. The particular questions that are chosen are tailored to the user using the model of the Individual user.
