Abstract
The concept of quantum well and superlattice structures stemmed from the pioneering work in semiconductor technology. Many novel features for electronic properties appear in these electronic heterostructures formed by electronic bands mismatch. Similar to this idea, we propose a photonic superlattice structure and numerically investigate its transmission properties. The structure consists of one two-dimensional photonic crystal with square lattice of parallel dielectric cylinders and in which some rows of cylinders are removed periodically. The transmission band number, number of transmission peaks in each band, frequency, and frequency interval can be tuned as desired via adjusting its structural parameters. With perfect transmission, high quality factors and fine controllability, the photonic superlattice could have potential applications in integrated optical circuits and optical communication systems as multiple-channeled filters.
