Abstract
Any optical system transmits light from a radiating source through a number of optical elements up to a receiving surface (screen). This paper is intended to provide a method for calculating the local illuminance at the screen without any assumptions on the imaging properties (not necessarily 'Kohler Illumination' ). The concept is based on ray tracing and lies completely within the geometric optics model. The direction of the tracing calculations is against the direction of physical light flux. A differential illuminance is associated with each ray and the total illumination is calculated by integrating over the entrance pupil area. The main work lies in computing the differential illuminance; a few examples of illumination systems analysis are presented.
