Abstract
Optical investigations of Red Blood Cell (RBC) sedimentation demonstrate a complexity of the process. One of the most important problem in the study of the process is an accurate measurement of the velocity of settling RBC aggregates. Up to now, the vertical component of the velocity has only been estimated. It is shown that particle image velocimetry (PIV), which has been successfully adopted in the study of sedimentation of non-Brownian particles, permits to obtain velocity vectors of the RBC aggregates. Two-dimensional velocity fields of the aggregates during sedimentation are determined. The velocity maps of the settling aggregates demonstrate that the motion of the aggregates is quite irregular and depends on the time.
