Abstract
Welding is a complicated physicochemical process and residual plastic strains are the product of nonlinear behaviors of the structure during it. Distortions of a welded structure injure the beauty of appearance of it while they cause errors during the assembly of the structure and reduce the strength of the structure. Nonlinear three-dimensional transient temperature fields are analyzed by FEM first. The heat source is modeled as a moving heat flux following a Gaussian distribution. In the process of analysis, the temperature dependent properties of materials and enthalpy are considered. Doing the welding experiment for a fundamental fillet welding model is to verify the numerical results, the infrared thermograph is used to follow and record the whole experiment process. The results of temperature field in FEM are supported by experimental data. Then, an elastic-plastic-model is established to analyze the residual strains under the temperature loads. The distortions of a simple stainless steel stiffened structure and a ship structure are obtained respectively. In addition, the residual distortions of the stiffened structure are measured by laser measurement. The residual distortions, namely, in-plane shrinkage and out-of-plane distortion are supported by the experimental data.
