Abstract
Silicate glass based fiber lasers emitting in the shortwave infrared spectrum, i.e., 1.4 μm to 3 μm are based on the phonon-terminated transitions of Er, Tm and Ho. In this review I will examine the pump, fiber and dopant configurations that have been tested in order to maximize the efficiency and output power produced from these transitions and I will highlight some of the issues that may need to be addressed in order to further scale the output power.
