Abstract
Algal bloom is of concern to any coastal regions especially when it is of close proximity to cities. This became particularly evident in Qingdao city in Shandong province of China, when it experienced an unexpected algal bloom covering major parts of its shore in June 2008. The study makes use of Aqua MODIS monthly composite images of Chlorophyll concentration, indication of algal productivity, alongside respective Aqua MODIS Sea Surface Temperature images. Given the images are readily available, variability of chlorophyll concentration with temperature in the region is mapped to see how the algal bloom vary spatially in ascertaining the extent of predominant regions with high concentration and also to understand if any temporal association can be made prior to the bloom. The methodology includes the use of SeaDAS and Open Source GIS in carrying out spatial analysis and image processing. The results provide insights into the seasonal pattern of chlorophyll distribution and sea-surface temperature prior to the bloom.
