18 January 1988 The Challenge Of VLSI Technology To Video Communications

Since the first laboratory demonstration of television transmission in the 1920's, there has been a considerable amount of research and development effort in video communications. However, many technological and economic barriers have kept video services (except broadcast TV) from wide-spread usage. The need for wideband transmission and the lack of cost-effective implementation of this service were two major barriers. Due to the increasing availability of fiber optics links and rapid advances in VLSI technology, there has been a renewed interest in video communications. Research and development activities in employing state-of-the-art VLSI technology to video communications can be expected to expand dramatically in the near future. In order to put more emphasis on this important application, this paper will give an overview for video communications and up-to-date research results relating to VLSI implementation of video codecs. Special emphases in this paper will be placed on high-speed Analog-to-Digital Conversion (ADC), digital filtering for video applications and the single-chip VLSI implementation for the discrete cosine transform (DCT), Vector Quantization (VQ), and motion detection and compensation.
