Abstract
A coupled waveguide with fluctuating coupling coefficients could influence its light transmission characteristics. According to Fourier theorem, an arbitrary fluctuation function can be expanded as a superposition of harmonic functions of position of different spatial frequencies. This paper investigates how the amplitude and the spatial frequency of the harmonic functions of the fluctuation influence the light transmission, including CW, quasi-CW and pulse cases. The fluctuation of the coupling coefficient is assumed as a sine waveform. The numerical results show that the influence of the fluctuation of the coupling coefficient on the coupling behaviors is negligible even the fluctuation amplitude of the coupling coefficient is as high as 30% if the period of the fluctuation is less than 2π/3. When the period of the fluctuation is larger than 2π/3, the switching performance degrades.
