Abstract
Air void is a crucial parameter for asphalt mix. However, it was impossible to capture the air void distribution based on traditional laboratory methods, which limited most of the previous research to focus on the average volume of air voids. However, specimens with the same total volume of air voids while with different distributions of air voids, will exhibit distinct mechanical behaviors. Computed Tomography technology was applied and a program was developed based on Matlab® to process CT images and the grayscale threshold value was calculated based on the laboratory results. The specimens with different compaction levels were scanned and the vertical air void distribution was analyzed.
