Abstract
This paper describes a VLSI processor that computes local surface orientation of range images. An orientation extraction algorithm has been chosen and enhanced for hardware realization. The processor uses a reconfigurable two-dimensional memory architecture in order to access kernel data in a parallel fashion. The intensive calculations needed by the algorithm are implemented on CMOS VLSI integrated circuits using a library of computer arithmetic cells. Multiplication, division, square and square-rooting are the operations designed in cellular arrays. However, the processor design is not dependent of this type of memory and therefore can be integrated in other architectures. The capability of real-time orientation computation is seen as an important step towards the development of higher level 3D sensors. The original algorithm and its enhancement are described. The dataflow, memory architecture, and the VLSI design of cellular arrays are presented. A discussion of the approach and results conclude this paper.
