Abstract
The problem of finding a recursive structure to evaluate the Wigner distribution (WD) is investigated. Recursive formula for updating the smoothed Wigner distribution are derived for on-line data processing of non-stationary processes. Recursion is established by first defining a sliding data window and then selecting the time-lag window to satisfy either a "direct" or "indirect" recursion condition. The former requires calculating the Pseudo-WD (PWD) prior to averaging and leads to a "computationally block-invariance" property. On the other hand, the "indirect" recursion, which is based on running Fourier transform, does not require explicit calculations of PWD, and provides a "computationally lag-invariance" property. Both properties are discussed in the paper.
