Image processing, both digital and optical, is an extremely broad field. Here, we will concentrate on digital image restoration on the basis of the optical transfer function (OTF) or even modulation transfer function (MTF) alone describing the image degradation. Generally, resolution is limited not by the electronics and not by the optics, but often by image motion and vibration. For long-range imaging, the image quality may be limited by atmospheric effects. These environmental effects are emphasized.
First, some basic general concepts on image restoration filters are presented. This is followed by descriptions of some specific techniques that can be used to restore images degraded by image motion and vibration and by atmospheric effects, including pictorial results illustrating corrections. Such restorations improve resolution by broadening overall system MTF. The chapter concludes with a description of noise-reduction techniques and resolution.
