The previous chapter considered noise regarding both electro-optical radiation detection and imaging. In this chapter, detection concepts are extended to include comparisons of both direct and heterodyne detection schemes, both of which can be used in passive and active imaging systems. Criteria are presented with which to compare detector devices. This is followed by a brief comparison of detector types.
As in the previous chapter, this material is relevant to imaging as well as optical communication. Its relevance to imaging pertains particularly to video signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) and noise-limited imaging in Chapter 11.
