Digital Holography and Digital Holographic Microscopy
Whereas conventional analog holography (AH) entails physical re-illumination of the hologram of the object with a reading beam and finding the 3D real or virtual image, digital holography (DH) is a numerical procedure that simulates Fresnel diffraction of light from the re-illuminated hologram on a computer and numerically determines the images, which can be displayed on a computer screen. Digital holography, like AH, records light scattered from an object along with a reference wave, but unlike AH, the light is recorded directly on a CCD camera, which is the recording device. Reconstruction of the hologram is performed by computational tools that simulate the propagation of light through the hologram and its subsequent diffraction to finally yield the complex optical fields that reconstitute or reconstruct the image.
