This chapter presents an overview of the physical hardware - the sensors, actuators, and power supplies - that biologically-inspired robots use to interact with the world. Because biology can inspire the design of robots at a multitude of levels, it is difficult to unequivocally include or exclude particular types of hardware from consideration. Today’s sensors, actuators, and power sources are often far from biology in their implementation, but they may still be inspired by biology in their design. But even if hardware is not biologically inspired, it may be of vital use in a robot using biomimetic control and behavior algorithms. We must therefore consider a wide range of robot hardware here.
