Abstract
Linear system theory was developed for electronic circuitry and has been extended to optical, electro-optical, and mechanical systems. It forms an indispensable part of system analysis. For modeling purposes, electronic imaging systems are characterized as linear spatial-temporal systems that are shift-invariant with respect to both time and two spatial dimensions. Although space is three-dimensional, an imaging system displays only two dimensions.
