An accurate physics-based scene simulation system can greatly assist in the development of optronic sensor systems. The performance of advanced image-based surveillance or tracking systems depends on a variety of factors with complex interactions. Extensive use of modeling and simulation in product development can reduce risk, lower cost, and shorten development time scales.
Simulation is used increasingly to support electro-optical system development throughout all of the product life-cycle phases, from concept analysis and development to deployment and maintenance. The advent of imaging systems presented the need for simulation to provide accurate image rendering in the optical spectral ranges. Physics-based infrared scene simulators are widely used in the development, evaluation, and optimization of electro-optical systems, such as infrared missile seekers, optical trackers, and thermal imagers.
