A few years ago, the necessity of video compression algorithms able to reduce the bit rate requested for video transmission became clear. There were new emerging services such as high definition television, videotelephony, video databases, videoconferencing and video-on-demand with strong requirements in high quality and/or in high compression ratios for transmission and storage. These market interests drove the standardization activities that have lead to the H.261, MPEG-1, H.263 and MPEG-2 standards.
