Abstract
This chapter addresses techniques used to represent information visually, called visualization, and the mechanisms and characteristics of the human visual system. Visualization can serve as an effective tool in the exploration and communication of the structure of complex data by harnessing the substantial processing power of the human visual system. Knowledge of the mechanisms of perception can be used to improve visualization effectiveness by ensuring that the most striking features of the image are also the most important, by minimizing the effects of interactions and illusions, and by designing representations which take advantage of the strengths of the visual system.
