Chapter 8:
Document Recognition
Abstract
The much-heralded age of the paperless society has yet to appear. There is an increasing demand to convert paper documents to electronic versions, not only for archived documents but for recently published ones as well. Document recognition technologies serve a vital role in document processing systems by providing the bridge from printing back to electronic storage and editing. Ironically, the proliferation of word processing software has increased the need for easy access to the contents of paper documents. Judging by the explosive growth of the World Wide Web, electronic publishing will be a ubiquitous human activity and document recognition will be an important means to obtain formatted content.
