Abstract
Due to their extreme sensitivity, phase-modulated sensors are the most publicized of all the fiber optic sensors.1,2 Phase-modulated fiber optic sensors typically involve the use of optical interferometers to measure the change in phase of a single light signal or, more often, the relative phase change between two light waves. To begin a discussion on interference, it is important to first mathematically describe the wave propagation process.
