In the infrared (IR) region of the spectrum, there are two atmospheric wavelength bands, or âwindows,â where the absorption due to atmospheric gases is low. One is from about 3 to 5 μm, the other from about 8 to 12 μm. An important difference between design in the visible and in the IR is that in the visible, objects are almost always detected by the light that they reflect; whereas in the IR region, objects are detected by the radiation that they emit.
