Abstract
In this chapter, the integration of multifunctional smart materials, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), and smart electronics is presented with examples covering some civil and aerospace structures and devices. Some applications include systems for noise suppression in aircraft cabin using “smart wall paper,” drag sensing and reduction in aircraft, sensing and control of ice formation and deicing on aircraft, remote measurement of tip deflection of helicopters using MEMS sensor and electronically tunable antenna, smart skin antennas for communication between sensors and actuators (telemetry devices), and health monitoring of rotorcrafts using MEMS sensors along with fiber optics sensor and remote antenna systems.
