Abstract
The main source for information about the applications was several monthly magazines that are semitechnical. They are sometimes called “throwaways.” The information is usually presented without review and by science writers rather than scientists. I found this the proper source for most of these applications for a book intended for nonscientists. I have found some articles in more technical publications, written my own versions of the writeups, and often used the pictures directly. I am indebted to the publishers of these periodicals for permission to use this information and especially the pictures. The other source of information was standard textbooks and monographs. These were the main source for information in the Basics, Instruments, and Nature sections of the book. I list here the details of the publishers for any who would like to get more information.
