Abstract
In this chapter, the nature of light is described, as are the main characteristics of light observed and used in various applications. These include refraction and reflection, diffraction, interference, scattering, and the interaction of light with matter - emission and absorption. Light is described in terms of waves, rays, and photons. Each is a model of light, and each has its advantages and limitations.
