Abstract
The description of any optical system requires solving the set of Maxwell's equations with boundary conditions allowing for a light source in the system as well as discontinuities of electromagnetic field at the interfaces between media filling the system. This means that within each medium physical properties (refractive index, in particular) are continuous, whereas abrupt changes of these properties occur at the interfaces between media. Approximations and methods used to simplify 1 the solution of Maxwell's equations are described in detail by Born and Wolf.
