Chapter 7:
Large Optics
Abstract
Gravity is the enemy of mirrors. When optics become large enough, the ideal three-point mount may produce gravitational performance error in excess of system requirements. While large is a relative term, with diameter-to-thickness (aspect) ratio coming into play, in general, when the size of an optic approaches the 1-m class, more than three points may be required to properly support it. In this case, the opto-structural analyst needs to try to maintain a quasi-kinematic design.
