Chapter 14:
Satellite Operations: Housekeeping and Communications
Abstract
There are two kinds of communication going through a typical communications satellite: the user traffic for which the satellite was placed into operation, and the continual everyday communications that maintain the satellite and its systems in operational status. The former are the communications operations (which make the money), and the latter are the satellite operations (which cost money). Ideally, the user of the satellite’s communications services should never have to be aware of the details of keeping the satellite on-station, charging batteries, eclipses, switching in backup amplifiers, and the myriad other items that keep the satellite working and producing revenue.
