The way satellite “dishes” handle incoming and outgoing radio waves has a major effect on the signal strength and interference levels we deal with when sending and receiving signals. The properties of dishes apply both to earthstations and antennas on the satellites. This chapter will consider how the mechanical properties of the dish control the ability of the antenna to transmit and receive radio waves. The following chapter will then deal with what happens electronically to the waves before and after they have bounced around the antenna structure itself.
