Chapter 10:
Image Processing for Intelligent Transportation Systems: Application to Road Sign Recognition
Abstract
We propose a scale and illumination-invariant road sign recognition system based on image processing. A nonlinear processor performs several correlations between an input scene and different reference targets. A bank of single filters provides invariance to scale variations of the target. The chosen nonlinearity allows certain tolerance to illumination fluctuations. We determine a threshold value by applying a learning algorithm, which permits us to decide whether an object is recognized or discriminated. The recognition system is tested by analysis of real images containing distorted road signs in a cluttered environment.
