We describe optoelectronic methods for the encryption of 2D images based in digital holography. Phase-shifting digital holography is used to record the complex amplitude distribution of the Fraunhofer or Fresnel diffraction pattern generated by a 2D image illuminated with coherent light. This information is encrypted by using random phase codes. Decryption of the encoded digital hologram is possible only with the proper random phase key. After decryption, the input information can be reconstructed optically or also digitally by a simple one-step fast Fourier transform procedure. These digital holography techniques combine the high speed and security of optical encryption with the advantages of electronic transmission, storage, and decryption. Experimental results are presented.
