Chapter 4: Agile Sensing Using Laser-based Systems
Sensing with electro-optical systems that employ lasers as an illumination source can have several advantages over sensors that rely on reflected or emitted light. In particular, the ability to control the illumination source, the receiver, and the optical aperture can lead to improved sensing or can enable sensing in scenarios that would normally preclude the ability to employ electro-optical systems. The degree of agile sensing described here is still in the concept-formulation stage. Basic architectures and technologies applicable to these architectures will be described in this chapter. This chapter will focus on laser-based sensing that is suitable for employment on airborne platforms. Applications for laser-based sensing systems will be presented. The parameters of such a system that can be adjusted will be described. Potential components for an agile sensing system will also be discussed.
