Abstract
Three-dimensional (3D) spatial correlations can be done fast and in parallel due to the use of optics. We survey recent developments in 3D electro-optical correlators. Several architectures of the correlator are presented including the 3D joint transform correlator and the spatial filtering scheme. Examples from the field of pattern recognition are demonstrated. As a by-product of the 3D correlator, we present a method of hologram recording without wave interference.
