As earlier noted, this book covers a specialized subject. We have by no means exhausted the topic of strength properties of glass and ceramics, nor was it ever attempted to do so. The equations presented are esoteric, if not unwieldy, in nature, but the author has tried to make the book practical by aiding readers in understanding them. Detailed formulations of fracture mechanics theory, including crack tip energy formulation, the J-integral, and other complexities, are not utilized, and, fortunately, are not required in this approach.
If you absorb even a part of this text, consider yourself among the elite in this field, for you are indeed in the extreme minority.
In the words of Virgil, "Perhaps someday we will look back fondly on these things."
