Abstract
After retiring from the Tokyo Institute of Technology on March 31, 2001 (Saturday), I immediately went to the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS: Gakushin), a new job location, on April 2 (Monday). At that time, an article describing the launch of the world’s first laser printer equipped with a surface emitting laser array appeared as a two-sided advertisement in the Nihon Keizai Shinbun (Nikkei Newspaper). I immediately put it on the wall of the new office and showed it to everyone who visited. It was commercialized by Fuji Xerox after many years of development. It was the beginning of the third millennium and the beginning of a new VCSEL era.
