Chapter 10:
Radiation Scattering by a Hexagonal Ice Cylinder: Boundary Conditions
This chapter discusses the imposition of boundary conditions for a plane wave incident on the modified hexagonal ice cylinder defined in the preceding chapter. Although the resulting formalism is complicated, some simplifications can be made owing to approximations dependent on a restricted radiation wavelength, as well as the small departure of the hexagon from an inscribed circle. These restrictions are not inherent in the method of analysis. The expressions used in the analysis are modeled on those used in the analysis of radiation scattering by a circular ice cylinder by Liou who asserts that the analysis for radiation scattering by the hexagonal ice cylinder found in nature “appears likely to be impossible to obtain.” The intention of this chapter is to show such an analysis is indeed possible.
