As in the case of prisms, a clear understanding of certain important aspects of small mirror design is believed to be necessary before we consider different techniques for mounting those mirrors. This chapter therefore deals primarily with the mirror's geometric configuration. We define the relative advantages of first- and second-surface mirror types, provide guidance in specifying the appropriate aperture dimensions for the reflecting surface, and illustrate substrate configurations that might be employed to minimize component wight and self-weight deflection. Typical designs for metallic mirrors are then considered. The chapter closes with a few observations about the design and use of pellicles.
