Beyond or surrounding the fundamental questions—what to work with and what to do with it—there are others of equal significance that are not addressed here in any depth. For example, how to get it? There are many pithy issues and associated decisions involved in field surveying: site characterization; initial “geophysical surveying” and/or the screening phase; structuring of survey stages; selection of data type or what specs to impose on it; selection of instruments or combinations of instruments; implementation of strategies and technologies for both navigation and positioning; data density; preprocessing, etc. To obtain good results one must resolve things in each of those areas sufficiently well, and each can provide significant challenges. This section focuses on the ultimate task that all these things are intended to contribute to, namely discrimination itself.
