Unlike meta-atom resonators, where much of the focus lies in the possibility of creating a negative phase velocity from simultaneously having both negative permittivity and negative permeability, form-birefringent material structures can attempt to control the group velocity to create a negative group velocity as well as other interesting properties. It is due to this group velocity manipulation that birefringent materials have the possibility of being narrowband filters, producing large field enhancements and even realizing negative-group-index materials. Until recently, these structures were geared toward the microwave or even terahertz regime, but with current technologies, one can imagine easy implementation of visible- to UV-range form-birefringent structures (FBSs).
