Chapter 1:
Review of Design Fundamentals
This chapter reviews principles detailed in Introduction to Infrared System Design, and recaps the important equations and concepts from that text. In addition, it outlines the procedures that I have found to be efficient when designing infrared systems. Infrared system design is not a synthetic process, as is some circuit design. One cannot proceed in an orderly fashion from the statement of the problem to the final solution. Rather, it is necessary to €œguess€ a solution and explore its relevance. Infrared system design is iterative. The iteration goes faster, as with most iterations, if the first guess is good. The quality of that first guess is surely a function of insight and experience, and - I guess - insight follows experience.
