In 1993 Eglin Air Force Base requested proposals for an imaging spectrometer system and subsequently awarded study contracts for it. This provides a good example of the trade-offs and designs one encounters in a challenging application. 14.1 Requirements Although they listed both the requirements and the goals for their anticipated measurement system, I will use one set of requirements that approximate those of the request. These are listed in Table 14.1 As with all such specification lists, there is room for discussion and negotiation. The specification was given in terms of wavenumbers, at 5cm −1 . Although the FTS provides constant wavenumber resolution, the other systems will provide constant wavelength resolution.
