Chapter 1:
The Problem of Graphical Image Interpretation
Abstract
This first chapter introduces the problem of graphical image interpretation, why this problem arises, and what difficulties may be met in trying to solve it. Manual and automatic input, as well as vector and raster data, are compared, and their advantages/drawbacks are analyzed. Since input/digitizing technology and its results always depend on input information, the specifics of various types of line drawings are considered. A brief analysis of existing commercial and research systems is included to show the current state of the art in this field. The main literature in this area, based mainly on conference proceedings and special issues of journals, is also given.
Online access to SPIE eBooks is limited to subscribing institutions.
