Abstract
This chapter begins our consideration of the interpretation process. First, the qualities of scanners used for the input of line drawings are considered and their main characteristics discussed. Scanned images are represented in computer format, so image file for-mats are examined for their advantages and disadvantages. If the scanned image is monochromatic (represented by a series of gray levels), the first operation that should be performed is thresholding (or binarization). The resulting binary image will be processed, and thus in this chapter the main concepts of binary image analysis are introduced. Finally, two important techniques of binary image processing (mathematical morphology and the distance transform) are described.
