Abstract
Recognition of cartographic objects is a very complicated task and the subject of much research and many publications. Long-term investigations show that this process cannot be made fully automatic and requires special interactive techniques and knowledge. We have tried to summarize and propose the main principles that could be used as a basis for constructing a map recognition technology. We show how three main classes of cartographic objects (lines, symbols, and areas) can be recognized and give details of some recognition algorithms. It is important in this task to make use of knowledge and apriori data already on maps. With this aim we show the kind of knowledge and representation required, and suggest algorithms for its use in the recognition process.
