In the last chapter, we saw how changes in temperature cause differential expansion or contraction of lenses and mount materials in the axial direction. We then developed means for analyzing the effects of these changes. Here we review the corresponding effects that occur in the transverse or radial direction. Rotational symmetry of the optical components and the pertinent portion of the mount is assumed, and all optomechanical components are assumed to be at a uniform temperature spatially, but not temporally. In this chapter, we outline methods for analyzing radial stress in the lens, radial clearance changes, and stress in the mount due to temperature changes.
