Is a subscription needed to use the SPIE Digital Library?
Anyone can search and browse the site, view table of contents and abstracts, and view author profiles. Additionally, users with either an institutional subscription or an individual subscription (attained via SPIE membership and/or purchase of a downloads packet) can view full text, download PDFs, and view references, figures and tables, and multimedia. Content labeled "Open Access" does not require a subscription. Content labeled "Free" requires non-subscribers to sign in to a personal account (there is no cost to create a personal account).
If you would like to encourage your institution to subscribe to the SPIE Digital Library, we suggest submitting our Recommendation Form to your institution's library (or similar information center).
What subscription options are available to individual users?
Full access to the SPIE Digital Library is available to institutional subscribers only.* Users who are not affiliated with a subscribing institution may establish individual subscriptions in two ways:
SPIE Membership Upon joining SPIE or renewing your membership, you automatically receive ten (10) Journal article or Proceedings paper downloads, and an online subscription to one of SPIE's Journals of your choice. Personal Journal subscriptions include access to all articles, editorials, reviews, etc., in that Journal. Members also get an opportunity to subscribe to additional Journals at a substantial discount.
Purchasing a Download Package Individuals may purchasedownloads without a membership. Individual subscription packages are available for either 50 or 25 downloads, and are good for one year. You can use your download tokens to download PDFs of Proceedings papers and Journal articles; they cannot be used to download eBook chapters.

How many downloads do I have left in my account?
Sign in to your account, click My Account, then click Subscriptions and Downloads in order to view any current subscription information and a count of available tokens for downloads.
How can I track the articles I have downloaded?
Sign in to your account, click My Account, then click Subscriptions and Downloads. Your previously downloaded content will appear.
(Please note that this information only appears for users who have purchased a certain number of download tokens in advance. For example, users can purchase a package of downloads -- packages of 25 or 50 download tokens are available -- or a membership to SPIE, which includes 10 download tokens. If a user has purchased individual papers on a one-off basis, we do not yet have the ability to display the order history.)
My subscription and/or downloads are missing from My Account, and I am unable to download content.
Please make sure you are signed in to your personal account on the SPIE Digital Library. Click My Account in the black ribbon at the upper right, then click Subscriptions & Downloads. If you see no subscriptions or download tokens in your account, please try signing out and then back in to your personal account. If this does not work, please contact SPIE Digital Library Customer Support.
My personal account includes an active subscription and/or download tokens, but when I try to download a PDF, I receive a purchase or login prompt.
Please make sure you are signed in to your personal account on the SPIE Digital Library. Next, confirm that you have an active subscription and/or download tokens by clicking My Account in the black ribbon at the upper right, then clicking Subscriptions & Downloads.
If you see an active subscription and/or download tokens, please check the listed expiration date. If your subscription or tokens is current but you are unable to successfully download a PDF, please contact SPIE Digital Library Customer Support.
If you do not see an active subscription and/or download tokens, but you think you should, please sign out of and sign back into your account. If this does not work, please contact SPIE Digital Library Customer Support.
