As I start my term as Editor, the Journal of Electronic Imaging begins its tenth year of publication. The journal has come a long way since its first issue, and for that we owe two individuals a debt of gratitude: Paul Roetling and Ed Dougherty. I especially want to thank Ed Dougherty who has served as Editor for the past six years. Under Ed’s watch, the journal has developed a solid base of publications spanning a broad range of topics in imaging and image processing. In addition, special sections have highlighted subject areas that are of particular interest to our readers, some of which have also been focal points of IS&T/SPIE conferences. Ed made it his first priority to ensure that the journal published only highquality work, and the fruits of his dedication can clearly be seen by perusing the pages of any issue of the journal.

As Editor, I plan to continue to build on what Ed, and Paul before him, have established. I want JEI to reflect the full scope of technical activities of its two sponsoring societies—IS&T and SPIE—in the area of electronic imaging. I certainly intend to maintain Ed’s standards of quality. I also want to give special attention to the timeliness with which papers are processed. Most importantly, I want to hear from you—our readers. What are your concerns? What would you like to see your journal cover? How do you think that JEI could be improved? Please send me e-mail at allebach@purdue.edu, or if you prefer, give me a call at 765/494-3535. I look forward to hearing from you.
