17 May 2018 Tensile stresses in ring-mounted glass lenses

Abstract
The author solves the differential equations of small displacement linear elastic theory for the surface stresses in ring-mounted glass lenses. He tests his formulation on two cases for which the solutions are known. The results are favorable. He then analyzes an actual lens mount design from his personal experience. He finds his results to be in disagreement with the most commonly used formulation, the results of which are much higher for the tensile stress. He attributes the discrepancy to inconsistent geometric considerations in Delgado and Hallinan’s formulation. The author tests his closed-form solution against a Nastran finite element model and finds the results in good agreement outside the immediate contact zone. In the contact zone, Nastran demonstrates its instability in calculating the surface stresses as it approaches the point of contact.
